The Satan Myth: Introductory questions - #2 - Who tempted David to take census, Satan or Jehovah?

Friend,

Do you know that 1Ch 21:1 and 2Sam 24:1 are two scriptures used by atheists, Non Christians and other detractors of the Judaeo-Christian faith to prove that there are contradictions in the Bible? There are groups that equate Jehovah God with Satan using these scriptures.

Please read both the passages in context.
And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. - 1Ch 21:1

And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.- 2Sam 24:1
Both the events are same, consequences or punishment are same, all the characters involved are the same, except the instigator: Satan and the LORD, respectively.
  • Please do an internet search whether these two passages contradict each other and you will see very “nice” explanations which say God has “permitted” Satan to perpetrate evil! This theory amounts to say that God is hand-in-glove with Satan!
  • These expositors may even refer to the tests faced by Job to prove their point. Sadly, most of them even do not know what was the fault of Job.
  • Ask your pastor / preacher / teacher about these scriptures and what you would get as answer is a “knowitall” smile. There are some who claim that either of the scriptures are corrupt. I bet many have not even noticed the apparent conflict in these scriptures.
  • The scriptures demand us to be ready to answer every question in all humility (1Pet 3:15). Knowitall smile is no sign of humility.
  • While you accept things by faith, the new generation is not that complacent and they need coherent and specific answers. Any failure to provide coherent answers would lead them into disbelief.

There are more questions to follow. Yes, by the abundant grace of God, we hope to answer these questions.

In Christ,
Tomsan Kattackal
